Is black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I've just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging the room. The wall feels a bit damp and the area doesn't get much air circulation. How urgent is it that I get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description, the situation you've described is a significant concern, especially with children involved. The black spots behind the wardrobe, combined with the dampness and poor air circulation, are classic indicators of a mold colony, likely of the Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) variety or another toxigenic species.

The coughing in your children is a primary health symptom associated with mold exposure. Mycotoxins and mold spores become airborne and act as potent irritants to the respiratory system. For children, whose immune systems are still developing, this can lead to persistent coughing, wheezing, allergic reactions, and in severe cases, more serious respiratory conditions. The urgency for professional assessment is high, as the visible growth is likely just the "fruit" of a larger, hidden network of hyphae within the wall.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. Year-round air conditioning creates constant temperature differentials between cool indoor air and warm walls, leading to condensation in poorly ventilated areas—exactly like the space behind a wardrobe. This moisture provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive.

Attempting remediation with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. More critically, it can agitate the colony, releasing a massive cloud of spores and mycotoxins into your home's air, potentially worsening your family's exposure.

We recommend an immediate professional inspection. Our certified experts at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras to map the full extent of the moisture intrusion and air sampling to identify the specific mold species and spore count. This evidence-based approach is crucial for implementing a safe and effective remediation plan, which includes containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment, all conducted under UAE environmental safety guidelines.
