Is black mold causing my husband's cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in my master bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the wall for a couple of months, and now we’re seeing these black, speckled patches spreading from behind the curtain. My husband has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away since it started. Is this black mold and could his symptoms be from that?

Based on the symptoms and the conditions you've described, there is a very high probability that the black, speckled growth is indeed mold, and your husband's persistent respiratory issues are a direct result of exposure to its spores.

The continuous water leakage from the AC vent creates a perfect microenvironment for mold growth. The constant moisture, combined with organic material like dust in the ductwork and the porous surface of the drywall, provides an ideal food source. The Dubai climate exacerbates this; our year-round reliance on AC leads to significant condensation issues if systems are not properly maintained. The cool air from the vent hitting the warmer wall surface also creates condensation, further feeding the mold behind the curtain where it can proliferate unseen.

The symptoms you describe—chronic stuffy nose and a persistent cough—are classic indicators of mold exposure, known as allergic fungal sinusitis. Mycotoxins and allergens released by mold colonies, particularly by species like Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "black mold"), can cause significant upper respiratory irritation and allergic reactions.

This situation requires immediate professional attention. Disturbing the mold by attempting to clean it yourself can aerosolize a massive number of spores, drastically increasing exposure and contaminating other areas of your home. In the UAE, professional remediation is not just recommended; it is often mandated by landlord-tenant regulations and community health standards to ensure the problem is resolved safely and completely.

I strongly advise you to cease use of that AC unit and call for a professional inspection and assessment. Our certified team at Saniservice can conduct comprehensive air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold species, assess the extent of the contamination within the wall cavity and AC system, and execute a full remediation protocol in compliance with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
