Is black mold from AC dangerous for asthma?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom AC unit in our Marina apartment has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and my husband's nighttime coughing has gotten way worse, to the point he's using his inhaler almost every night. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found some black speckling on the underside. Given how much worse his asthma is getting, is this something we need to get an expert to handle immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Yes, black mold from an AC unit is extremely dangerous for someone with asthma. What you're describing is a classic and urgent scenario we encounter frequently in Dubai, especially in high-humidity coastal areas like Marina.

The damp smell indicates microbial growth inside the AC unit itself, likely in the damp evaporator coils or the drip pan. The black speckling on the carpet underside is a secondary growth caused by the cold, humid air from the vent condensing and creating a damp microenvironment—a perfect breeding ground for mold. The types of mold commonly found in AC systems, like Cladosporium and Aspergillus, are potent allergens and respiratory irritants. For an asthmatic, this isn't just an annoyance; the continuous inhalation of these spores while sleeping can trigger severe bronchial inflammation, coughing fits, and dangerous asthma exacerbations.

This cannot wait. The combination of visible growth and a direct health impact elevates this to a serious issue. DIY cleaning is not advised, as improper handling will aerosolize the spores and contaminate your entire apartment, making the problem vastly worse.

You need a professional inspection and remediation. We follow strict UAE standards for indoor air quality and remediation set by Dubai Municipality. A certified inspector will conduct air and swab testing to identify the specific mold type, assess the extent of contamination within the AC ducting and the room, and execute a controlled remediation plan to safely remove the biofilm from the AC system and the affected building materials.

Please, for your husband's health, get this addressed immediately. Call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency inspection.
