Is black mold in my Dubai closet dangeros to clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a spreading patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. My main concern is whether this is the dangerous 'black mold' I've heard about and if I can clean it myself with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional company here in Dubai.

It depends on the extent and type of mold. A small patch (under one square foot) of surface mold on a non-porous material can sometimes be addressed by a homeowner with proper precautions. However, black discoloration doesn't confirm the notorious 'toxic black mold' (Stachybotrys); only lab analysis can identify the species and its potential health risks.

For your situation—a spreading patch on an exterior wall that's worsened with humidity—the root cause is likely condensation or a hidden moisture issue within the wall cavity. Bleach is not recommended; it’s ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture. The priority is identifying and stopping the moisture source, which often requires a professional inspection to assess the wall’s integrity and the HVAC system’s role in creating the humid microclimate.

In Dubai’s climate, where high humidity and constant AC use can create significant condensation issues, improper cleaning can disperse harmful spores throughout your home. For anything beyond a very small, superficial spot, a professional assessment is strongly advised to ensure it’s handled safely and the underlying cause is resolved to prevent rapid regrowth.
