Is black mold in my Dubai villa closet dangerous?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. I'm in a Jumeirah villa and I'm really worried it might be the toxic kind, especially since my husband has started sneezing more. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without making the spores spread everywhere?

That's a very common and understandable concern for homeowners here in Dubai, especially in older villas in areas like Jumeirah. The black, fuzzy patch you're describing could be a few different things, but the main thing to know is that not all black mold is the infamous "toxic" black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum). Many common molds appear black and can cause the allergic reactions, like sneezing, that your husband is experiencing.
For a small patch (less than about one square foot), you can attempt to clean it yourself safely. The key is to NOT dry brush or vacuum it, as that will aerosolize the spores. Instead, lightly mist the area with a diluted white vinegar solution (a common, effective household option) or a specialist mold cleaner to dampen the spores. Then, wipe it away with a disposable cloth. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during this process. Ensure the area is well-ventilated. However, the presence of mold indicates a moisture issue. In our humid climate, this is often due to condensation from AC units, a small leak in the roof or wall, or lack of air circulation in closets. Simply cleaning without fixing the source means it will absolutely return. For health concerns and to ensure the spores haven't spread into your HVAC system or wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and spore count, which is crucial for determining the right remediation plan. If the area is larger, you see it returning, or the symptoms persist, please don't risk it.
