Is black mold under my stairs dangerous to clean?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot more than usual, and I’m starting to panic. I pulled out a few toys from the storage area under our villa’s staircase here in Jumeirah and found a patch of black, fuzzy stuff on the back wall. It’s been so humid the last couple of months I guess the space never dried out properly.
Is this the dangerous kind of black mold and how do I safely clean it without making my family sick?

Based on your description, the situation under your staircase presents a significant health and contamination risk. The black, fuzzy growth is almost certainly a mold colony, and its presence indicates a chronic moisture issue, a common problem in Dubai's high-humidity climate where condensation and trapped air in storage areas are prevalent. Disturbing it without proper containment will aerosolize millions of microscopic spores, potentially spreading them throughout your home's air conditioning system and living spaces, which can exacerbate your children's respiratory symptoms like coughing.
Attempting to clean it yourself is strongly discouraged. The combination of high humidity and organic materials (like drywall or wood) creates an ideal environment for toxigenic species like Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as "black mold." Its mycotoxins can cause severe health effects, especially in children. UAE regulations and best practices for mold remediation require professional assessment and intervention to ensure it is handled safely and effectively. The correct protocol involves a certified inspection to identify the mold species and the full extent of the moisture problem, followed by engineering controls such as negative air pressure containment, HEPA filtration, and the use of professional-grade antimicrobials for remediation. For the safety of your family, I recommend you cease using the area and contact a professional immediately.
