Is closet mold dangerous for my toddler next door?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started smelling really musty, and I just found a patch of black spots on the back wall and on a couple of leather bags I stored there. This probably started after the heavy dew we had a couple of weeks ago, but it's definitely gotten worse. My main concern is my two-year-old son, whose room is right next door—is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Based on the symptoms you've described—a musty odor and visible black spots on the wall and leather goods—you are almost certainly dealing with an active mold colony. The recent heavy dew is a classic catalyst, as it elevates indoor humidity levels, creating the perfect environment for mold growth, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like closets.

The primary concern for your toddler is the inhalation of mold spores and mycotoxins, which can become aerosolized and travel through the air into adjacent rooms. For a developing respiratory system, this exposure can lead to allergic reactions, asthma exacerbation, coughing, wheezing, and other respiratory irritations. The proximity of his room significantly increases the risk of exposure.

Given the climate in Dubai, where air conditioning runs year-round, the temperature differential between a cool closet interior and the humid air outside can cause significant condensation, providing the moisture mold needs to thrive. This is a common issue in UAE residences.

I strongly recommend against waiting. Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance can cause a massive release of spores. The remediation process requires professional containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure the mold is safely and completely removed, protecting your family's health.
