Is closet mold in my Mirdif villa a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom closet on the outer wall of our villa in Mirdif has started to get these black speckles in the corners, and I just found a couple of my shoes with white fuzzy stuff on them. It's been so humid the last few weeks that the walls even feel a bit damp. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

Based on your description of the black speckles in the corners and the white fuzzy growth on organic materials like leather shoes, this is a confirmed mold colony. The damp walls you mention are a critical red flag, indicating an ongoing moisture issue that is actively feeding the growth.

In the UAE's high-humidity climate, especially during the summer months and in areas like Mirdif, this is a common problem. The temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior creates significant condensation within external wall cavities, which often manifests in closets and behind furniture. While a surface clean with a bleach solution (a 10:1 water to bleach ratio is recommended) and running a dehumidifier can address the visible growth and reduce ambient moisture, it is almost certainly a temporary fix. Bleach does not kill mold roots (hyphae) penetrating porous surfaces like drywall and wood, and it will not address the hidden condensation within the wall structure. The mold will likely return.

For a villa in Dubai, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the dampness within the wall. This diagnosis is crucial for a permanent solution. Remediation involves not only removing the contaminated materials but also correcting the underlying cause, often through improved ventilation or insulation strategies to prevent condensation.
