Is damp AC causing black mold and health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making our whole bedroom in Jumeirah feel damp, and I just spotted a few small black speckles along the bottom of the wall near the vent. It’s been like this for a couple of weeks and my throat has been feeling scratchy ever since. How urgent is it that I get a professional to check this out, and could this be the reason I’ve been feeling unwell?

Based on your description from Jumeirah, this is a very common and urgent issue we see in Dubai. That damp feeling from the AC and the black speckles are classic signs of a mold colony, likely Aspergillus or Stachybotrys (black mold), developing due to condensation from the air conditioning unit.

The scenario you've described—dampness, visible growth near the vent, and a scratchy throat—are directly correlated. Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air, which are then circulated by the AC, leading to the respiratory irritation and other allergic symptoms you're experiencing. This is a serious indoor air quality concern.

In the UAE's climate, AC units are a primary source of moisture if not properly maintained. The urgency is high. Left unchecked, this small colony can spread rapidly through your wall cavity and ductwork, becoming a much larger remediation project. Furthermore, prolonged exposure can exacerbate health issues.

I strongly recommend you cease using that AC unit immediately and schedule a professional inspection. DIY assessments are insufficient as the visible mold is often just the "tip of the iceberg." A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the dampness and air sampling to identify the spore count and species, which is crucial for planning the remediation in line with UAE health and safety guidelines.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself, as improper disturbance can aerosolize the spores and contaminate your entire apartment. For a proper assessment and quote, please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can dispatched a certified specialist to your location in Jumeirah to conduct a thorough inspection.
