Is damp black mold behind furniture dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were rearranging furniture; the wall feels slightly damp to the touch. Is this the dangerous kind of black mold and what’s the safest way to get rid of it without exposing my family?

Based on your description, what you're seeing is a serious cause for concern, especially with children in the home. The combination of visible black discoloration, a damp wall, and respiratory symptoms like coughing strongly indicates a mold infestation. While not all black mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum), the presence of moisture means any mold colony is actively growing and releasing spores and mycotoxins into your indoor air, which can absolutely trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and persistent coughing in kids, whose immune systems are more vulnerable.

In the UAE's humid climate, this is a common issue. The dampness behind the wardrobe is likely due to condensation from the exterior wall, a frequent problem here where temperature differences between highly air-conditioned interiors and the external heat create perfect conditions for mold.

Do NOT attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing your family's exposure. Over-the-counter sprays are ineffective for a established growth and can be harmful if mixed incorrectly.

The safest approach is a professional inspection. We use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the exact moisture source and air sampling to identify the mold species and spore count. This dictates the correct, safe remediation protocol, which involves full containment, HEPA filtration, and professional-grade antimicrobials. All work is done in accordance with UAE standards for environmental safety.

For your family's health, I strongly recommend you get a certified specialist to assess this. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and a plan to resolve this safely.
