Is high humidity causing mold growth?« Back to Previous Page

After the heavy rains we experienced last month, I noticed a persistent musty smell in my bedroom, especially during the night. The humidity seems to be really high even with the AC running constantly, and both my kids have been coughing more frequently lately. Is there anything specific I should look for or do to address this issue?

Yes, high humidity can definitely be a major factor leading to mold growth in your home. In the UAE and Dubai specifically, we often experience periods of high humidity especially after heavy rains. The persistent musty smell you're noticing is very likely due to mold thriving in damp conditions.

In our region, the UAE Environmental Protection Authority (UAE EPA) has set guidelines for indoor air quality which include recommended maximum relative humidity levels of around 60% or less, depending on outdoor temperature and weather patterns. High humidity can create an ideal environment for mold spores to germinate and grow, especially in areas where moisture tends to accumulate like walls, ceilings, carpets, and under furniture.

The coughing your kids are experiencing could also be linked to the presence of mold. Exposed to mold spores, especially if they're allergic or sensitive, children can develop respiratory issues such as coughs, wheezing, and even asthma symptoms.

To address this issue, you should consider taking several steps:

1. Increase ventilation: Open windows during daytime when outdoor humidity is lower than indoor levels to allow fresh air in. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens to remove excess moisture.

2. Improve dehumidification: While your AC does help, it might not be sufficient given the high humidity post-rains. Consider installing a dedicated dehumidifier or even a portable one for your bedroom if needed. Aim for a relative humidity of around 50% or lower in your living spaces.

3. Inspect and treat damp areas: Check for any visible signs of water damage or condensation on walls, windows, or other surfaces. Promptly address these issues by drying them out completely and ensuring proper ventilation to prevent mold from forming.

4. Professional inspection: Given the persistence of the problem despite your efforts, it might be wise to call in a professional environmental inspection service like 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a thorough assessment. They can provide a detailed analysis and recommend specific remediation measures tailored to your home.

Remember, addressing high humidity is crucial not only for preventing mold growth but also for maintaining good indoor air quality which impacts your family's health.
