Is it safe to clean black speckles myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. The weird thing is, the AC vent is right above it, so it doesn't feel damp. Is it safe to clean this myself with something from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company for this?

Based on your description, this is a very common issue we encounter in Dubai, especially in closets on external walls. The black speckles are highly likely to be mold. The presence of an AC vent above it is a critical clue. While the AC cools, the wall itself, particularly if it's a concrete external wall, can be significantly cooler than the room's dew point. This causes moisture in the warm, humid Dubai air to condense inside the wall cavity, creating a hidden damp environment perfect for mold growth, even if the closet surface feels dry.
For a small, confined area (less than 1 square meter), a cautious DIY approach may be possible. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. A supermarket-bought hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner is preferable to bleach, as it is more effective at killing the mold roots and does not leave a toxic residue. Scrub the area gently to avoid aerosolizing spores. However, I must strongly emphasize the need for a professional inspection. The visible speckles are often just the "tip of the iceberg," with a larger colony thriving within the wall. Disturbing it without proper containment and air filtration can spread spores throughout your bedroom. Furthermore, the root cause—the condensation issue—must be professionally diagnosed and remedied to prevent immediate recurrence. In the UAE, improper remediation that leads to cross-contamination can violate health and safety standards for your household. Given the location on an external wall, this is a systemic building envelope issue, not just a surface cleaning problem. For a definitive diagnosis and a permanent solution that addresses the hidden moisture source, I recommend a professional assessment. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and thermal imaging, to identify the exact cause and scope.
