Is strange green stain and odor normal in guest bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a strange greenish stain growing on the bathroom ceiling near the corner. The smell is really strong too, like mildew, but it’s been there for days now even after cleaning. It’s in the guest bathroom which we’ve only used occasionally, so I’m not sure if it’s my responsibility to fix or what caused it. Has anyone had similar issues in their rental property and how did you handle it?

The strange greenish stain and the musty odor in your guest bathroom could indeed indicate a mold issue. In the UAE, particularly in Dubai, it is quite common for bathrooms to suffer from moisture-related problems due to high humidity levels, especially during winter months or after heavy rains.

In our experience, such conditions can create an environment where mold thrives. The greenish color you noticed is indicative of mold growth, often caused by a variety of species including Cladosporium and Penicillium, which are commonly found in damp environments. This isn’t surprising given the guest bathroom's occasional use; moisture can build up over time even with infrequent usage.

From a practical perspective, it’s crucial to address this issue promptly as molds can pose health risks, particularly for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues. According to UAE regulations, landlords are generally responsible for maintaining properties in good condition, which would include addressing mold issues. However, it's advisable to check your lease agreement to confirm who is responsible.

Given the persistent nature of the smell and stain despite cleaning efforts, a professional inspection might be necessary to properly assess the extent of the problem and recommend appropriate remediation steps. Many companies in Dubai offer comprehensive mold testing and remediation services that adhere to local standards such as ASHRAE guidelines for indoor air quality management.

To mitigate further issues, ensure proper ventilation in the bathroom by using exhaust fans during and after bathing/showering. Replace any damaged or old building materials like drywall, tiles, or insulation that may be contributing to moisture accumulation. Additionally, keeping a regular maintenance schedule for cleaning surfaces prone to mold growth—such as grout lines, behind faucets, and on ceilings—can prevent future outbreaks.

If you decide to proceed with professional services, consider companies certified by organizations such as the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) or other reputable bodies that focus on environmental health.
