Is the black mold behind my wardrobe dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks, and I just discovered a patch of black mould behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall in our Jumeirah villa. I'm really worried about their health and wondering how this could have happened, especially since we run the AC constantly. How do I find a reputable company to do a proper inspection and tell me if this is the dangerous kind?

The black mould you've discovered is a significant concern, particularly given the health symptoms in your children. While the term "black mould" is often associated with Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins, visual identification alone is insufficient. Many dark-coloured moulds are common in Dubai's climate and can still cause allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, especially in children whose immune systems are still developing.

The location on an exterior wall in your Jumeirah villa is a classic indicator of a condensation issue. Despite running the AC constantly, this is a primary cause. Your AC cools the air, reducing its humidity, but the cold exterior wall behind the wardrobe creates a thermal bridge. When the warm, humid air from the rest of the villa penetrates behind the furniture and contacts this cold surface, it condenses, creating the perfect, hidden environment for mould growth. This is an extremely common problem in UAE properties.

A professional inspection is absolutely necessary. A reputable company will not only conduct a visual assessment but also use a moisture meter to quantify the dampness in the wall and perform air and surface sampling. This lab analysis is the only way to definitively identify the genus and species of the mould, which determines its potential health risks and the appropriate remediation protocol.
