Is the black mold in my AC dangerous for my child?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet in my son's bedroom. We only noticed the dark patch behind his dresser a couple of weeks ago, but now there’s a black, fuzzy spot growing there and my youngest has had a persistent cough for days. Could this be dangerous black mold and who should I call in Dubai to get it tested and removed properly?

Based on your description, the situation warrants immediate professional attention. The combination of an AC leak, a persistent cough in a child, and visible black, fuzzy growth is highly indicative of a significant mold issue, likely including Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or other toxigenic species common in Dubai's climate.

The danger to your child is real. Mold colonies release microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air. When inhaled, these can cause a range of health effects, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions like asthma. Symptoms can include persistent coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, throat irritation, and headaches. The proximity of the growth to your son's sleeping area means he is experiencing prolonged, concentrated exposure.

The UAE's high humidity, especially during the summer months, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold when combined with condensation from faulty AC units. This is not a problem to handle yourself. Disturbing the mold during DIY attempts can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing the contamination and the health risk.

You must call a certified professional for inspection and remediation. In Dubai, companies like ours, Saniservice, are equipped with the necessary technology (e.g., moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, specialized air pumps for spore trap sampling) to conduct a comprehensive assessment. We follow strict protocols for containment, removal, and hygienization to ensure the problem is resolved safely and effectively, preventing recurrence. Do not delay; for the health of your family, please contact us for a professional assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
