Is the black mold in my kids' room dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since last month, and I just found what looks like black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and our villa is in Jumeirah. Is this the kind of mold that’s a serious health risk, or am I overreacting?

Based on your description, the situation you're describing is a significant concern that warrants immediate attention. The combination of a persistent cough in children and visible black mold growth on an exterior wall is a classic indicator of a problematic moisture issue, likely from a small leak or condensation within the wall cavity.

In the UAE's humid climate, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, this is unfortunately common. The wall facing the outside is prone to thermal bridging, where condensation forms inside, creating the perfect damp environment for mold. The type of mold cannot be identified by color alone; what appears black could be Stachybotrys chartarum (often called "toxic black mold") or another species like Aspergillus or Cladosporium. Many of these produce mycotoxins and allergens that are known to cause and exacerbate respiratory issues, particularly in children whose immune systems are still developing.

You are not overreacting. Continuous exposure is the primary health risk, and your children's symptoms are a major red flag. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality in residential properties, and this level of infestation falls outside of safe parameters.

A DIY approach is strongly discouraged as improper handling can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your villa. This requires professional assessment and remediation. We need to conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the full extent of the problem, which is often much larger than what's visible.

For the health of your family, please contact us immediately to schedule an inspection. Call our experts at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. We can assess the situation safely and provide a plan to not only remove the mold but, crucially, fix the underlying moisture source to prevent it from returning.
