Is this black mold behind my sofa dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the last two weeks and I can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa bed in our Deira apartment for a deep clean and found a bunch of black spots along the wall behind it that feel damp. We keep the AC on but that wall always feels a bit cold. Is this dangerous black mold and who should I call to test it properly?

Based on your description, the situation you've described in your Deira apartment is a classic scenario for hidden mold growth and absolutely warrants immediate attention. The black spots, combined with the persistent dampness and the cold wall surface (a condition known as thermal bridging, very common here with our concrete construction), strongly indicate a mold colony. The non-stop coughing in your children is a significant red flag and a common health effect of prolonged mold spore exposure.

While not all black-colored mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys chartarum), any mold in this quantity can cause serious allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and exacerbate asthma, especially in children. The constant AC use can actually spread the spores throughout the apartment every time it cycles on.

You should not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony will release a massive cloud of spores. In the UAE, proper mold assessment and remediation is governed by strict standards like the Abu Dhabi EHSMS and Dubai Municipality guidelines, which require certified professionals.

You need a professional inspection that includes moisture mapping and air quality testing to identify the exact species and the full extent of the problem, which is likely inside the wall cavity. The cold wall suggests a possible condensation issue or even a hidden pipe leak.

For a certified inspection and testing to UAE standards, you need to call a professional environmental company immediately. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule a thorough assessment and protect your family's health.
