Is this black mold in my closet dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy stuff in the corner of their bedroom closet where I store their winter clothes. Our villa in Jumeirah has been so humid lately despite the AC running constantly. Could this be black mold and is it dangerous enough that I need to get them out of the room right away?

Based on your description, the situation presents several classic indicators of a hazardous mold infestation that requires immediate attention. The black, fuzzy growth in a closet, combined with persistent child coughing and high indoor humidity, is highly concerning. In the UAE's climate, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah, air conditioning systems often create significant condensation if not properly balanced, leading to the perfect breeding ground for mold species like Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly called "black mold"), which thrives on cellulose-rich materials (e.g., cardboard boxes, cotton-based winter clothes, and drywall).

This type of mold is particularly dangerous as it can produce mycotoxins. Inhalation of these spores and toxins can cause severe health effects, especially in children, including chronic coughing, respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and worsened asthma. Given that your children are already exhibiting symptoms, it is a serious health risk. I strongly recommend you restrict their access to the room immediately and do not attempt to disturb the patch yourself, as this will aerosolize the spores.

For your safety and a definitive diagnosis, a professional inspection is mandatory. DIY test kits are unreliable. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use advanced tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the moisture source and air sampling to speciate the mold, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol as per Dubai Municipality guidelines.
