Is this black mold making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, powdery spots spreading on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat for the past month and my allergy pills aren't helping like they used to. Is this black mold, and could it be the reason I’ve been feeling so unwell?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that you are dealing with a significant mold issue, and it is very likely the cause of your persistent health symptoms. The black, powdery spots spreading on the back of the wardrobe are a classic sign of mold colonization, and its location on an exterior wall strongly suggests a condensation problem, which is extremely common in Dubai due to our high humidity levels and the constant use of air conditioning.

The wall behind the wardrobe is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior causes moisture to condense within the wall cavity. This trapped moisture creates the perfect environment for mold, such as the common Cladosporium or the more toxigenic Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold"). Your symptoms—chronic morning stuffiness, sore throat, and unresponsive allergies—are textbook indicators of prolonged exposure to mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by an active colony.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores throughout your bedroom, exacerbating your exposure. This requires professional assessment and remediation.

A certified inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the full extent of the infestation hidden within the wall. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing the contaminated materials (e.g., the drywall and possibly the wardrobe), and using specialized equipment like HEPA scrubbers to decontaminate the space.
