Is this mold dangerous, or can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a bit lately and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the outside wall of our villa in Mirdif. It must have been growing slowly from the humidity, but we only spotted it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. Is this something I can safely clean with vinegar myself, or do I need to call in a professional company to check it out?

Good question. This is a very common scenario in Dubai and Mirdif villas, especially on those outside walls that face the humidity and occasional condensation from our AC systems.

What you're describing—black and green fuzzy growth behind furniture on an exterior wall—is almost certainly a mold colony. The fact that it's fuzzy indicates it's active and sporulating. The primary concern isn't the mold itself, but the millions of microscopic spores it releases into your bedroom's air, which are a known respiratory irritant. This is very likely the cause of your kids' coughing.

In the UAE, the safety of a DIY cleanup depends entirely on the size of the affected area. A general guideline we follow from international standards (like the IICRC S520) is that if the patch is smaller than one square meter (roughly 10 sq ft), a careful DIY approach might be possible. However, given that it's fuzzy, it's already well-established.

Vinegar is a mild disinfectant but is often insufficient for a robust colony. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize the spores, spreading the problem throughout the room. You need to isolate the area, wear proper PPE (N95 mask, gloves), and use a HEPA vacuum followed by an EPA-approved fungicide, not just a household cleaner.

However, the crucial point is the source. Just cleaning the visible mold does nothing to address the moisture problem that caused it. In your villa, this is likely due to a thermal bridge on the outside wall causing condensation, or perhaps a tiny hidden leak. Without a professional inspection to identify and recommend a fix for the moisture source, the mold will 100% return, even after you clean it.

For your family's health and to ensure it's done right, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. We can identify the species, the extent, and most importantly, the root cause. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a proper inspection. It's not worth the risk to your children's health to guess.
