Mold behind wardrobe: professional cost or DIY cleaning?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m noticing black spots behind the wardrobe that’s against that wall. It’s a rental apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and the humidity has been awful lately. What’s the average cost for a professional mold inspection and remediation for a small area like this, and is it worth it or should I just try to clean it myself with bleach?

Good question. This is a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in JVC with its high humidity levels. The AC leak is the root cause, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive behind that wardrobe.

First, a critical warning: do not use bleach. It's mostly water, which feeds the mold, and the chlorine only bleaches the surface color. It doesn't kill the roots (hyphae) and the fumes can be dangerous in an enclosed space. It's a temporary fix that will fail.

Regarding cost for a pro: For a localized area like you describe, a professional inspection and testing to confirm the mold type and spore levels typically ranges from AED 800 to AED 1,500. If remediation is needed, the total cost for a small contained area often falls between AED 2,000 and AED 4,500. This includes containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the moisture source—which is absolutely crucial. The landlord is typically responsible for fixing the AC leak, but you are responsible for reporting it. As a tenant, you should inform them immediately in writing to avoid potential liability for damages.

Given that the mold is hidden and has likely been growing for months, a DIY approach is not advisable. You risk disturbing it and spreading spores throughout your bedroom, worsening the air quality and potential health issues. Professional assessment is strongly recommended to ensure it's properly handled.
