Mold in bathroom causing child's cough, need doctor?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our Jumeirah villa's main bathroom has been looking darker and darker over the past month, and now I'm seeing these tiny black specks of what looks like mold. My youngest son has had a stuffy nose and a weird cough that just won't go away since it started, and I'm starting to worry they're connected. Is this common in Dubai homes, and should I be getting him checked for mold exposure, or just get a professional cleaner first?

Good evening from Dubai. What you're describing is an unfortunately common issue we see in villas across Jumeirah, and your concern for your son is absolutely valid.

The darkening grout and black specks are almost certainly microbial growth, a form of mold or mildew. The UAE's high humidity, especially post-summer, combined with the steam from showers and often inadequate bathroom ventilation, creates a perfect breeding ground. This is a classic indoor environmental quality problem here.

Your son's persistent stuffy nose and non-resolving cough are hallmark symptoms of exposure to mold spores. These spores are airborne irritants and allergens that can trigger upper respiratory tract inflammation, leading to exactly the symptoms you describe. For children, whose immune systems are still developing, the reaction can be more pronounced.

Here’s what I recommend: Do not just hire a regular cleaner. Standard cleaning can agitate the spores, causing a massive release into the air and potentially worsening the situation. The priority is a professional inspection. We need to identify the exact species of mold (some are more problematic than others) and assess the extent of the growth, which may have penetrated behind the tiles.

For your son's health, it is prudent to consult a pediatrician and inform them of the suspected mold exposure. They can assess if his symptoms require specific treatment.

For the villa, you need a certified assessment. Our team uses moisture meters, thermal imaging, and air quality monitors to provide a full picture and a remediation plan that is compliant with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards. Please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for an immediate consultation. Let's get your indoor air quality back to a safe standard.
