Returning mold on wardrobe wall: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming on the back wall of our wardrobe in the master bedroom, which is on the outside wall of the building. I wiped it away with vinegar a week ago, but it's already starting to come back and the clothes inside have a faint damp smell. Is this something I can keep tackling myself with stronger cleaning products, or do I need to call in a professional to find the source?

The recurring mold on your wardrobe wall is a significant indicator of a persistent moisture issue, common in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The fact it's on an outside wall suggests a potential thermal bridging problem, where condensation forms as warm, humid air meets the cooler surface of the AC-chilled wall. Vinegar is a temporary, superficial fix; it does not address the moisture source or kill the mold roots (hyphae) embedded within the porous building materials.

For a problem that returns this quickly, a DIY approach is not advised. The faint damp smell confirms microbial volatile organic compound (MVOC) production, meaning the colony is active. Stronger, off-the-shelf biocides are ineffective against the root cause and can be hazardous if misapplied.

Professional intervention is required. A certified inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment, including moisture mapping with a protimeter to pinpoint the exact source—be it condensation, a hidden plumbing leak, or minor water ingress from the building envelope. Air and surface sampling will identify the mold species and spore concentration, which is critical for determining the correct remediation protocol as per UAE standards.

Ignoring this can lead to health implications and structural damage. The remediation process involves containing the area, removing contaminated materials, applying professional-grade antimicrobials, and most critically, implementing engineering controls to prevent recurrence, such as improving ventilation or adding insulation to the cold wall.
