Safest DIY black mold removal with kids at home?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom where the wall meets the ceiling. My youngest son has been having allergy-like symptoms for a couple of weeks now, and I'm getting really worried it's because of this. The bathroom doesn't have a window, and even with the exhaust fan, it never feels completely dry. What is the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, considering we have small kids in the apartment?

The mold you've described in your bathroom is a common yet serious issue in Dubai, exacerbated by our high humidity and year-round AC use, which creates significant condensation. The location at the ceiling-wall junction strongly suggests a persistent moisture problem, likely from inadequate ventilation. Your son's symptoms are a major red flag; certain molds, like Stachybotrys (black mold), can produce mycotoxins that trigger such allergic reactions.

For a small patch (under 1 sq. ft.), a cautious DIY approach is possible, but safety is paramount with children. First, isolate the area. Seal the bathroom door with plastic sheeting and tape. Ensure the exhaust fan is running during and for at least 48 hours after the procedure. Wear an N95 respirator, goggles, and gloves.

Do not use bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and can release harmful fumes. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area gently with a stiff brush. After cleaning, thoroughly dry the area using a dehumidifier and fan. However, if the mold has penetrated the paint or drywall, the material is compromised and must be professionally removed and replaced. Merely cleaning the surface will not solve the problem.

Given the potential health risks to your son and the likelihood of hidden mold within the ceiling cavity due to the constant moisture, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians at Saniservice use thermal imaging and borescopes to assess the full extent of the contamination behind walls and in AC systems, which is a critical step in any Dubai property.
