Safest way to clean black mold for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I just found patches of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's an interior wall in our villa in Jumeirah, and I'm worried the humidity is making it worse. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without making their symptoms worse?

Given the symptoms you're describing—kids coughing for weeks—and the location of the mold (an interior wall), this is a situation that requires extreme caution. The humid climate in Jumeirah acts like an incubator for mold, especially in enclosed spaces like closets.
First, do NOT attempt to clean this if the kids are present or if the area is larger than about one square meter. Disturbing the mold will release millions of spores into the air, which can severely worsen respiratory issues. For a small patch, safety is paramount. You MUST seal off the room from the rest of the villa. Cover the door with plastic sheeting and tape. Wear an N95 respirator, gloves, and safety goggles—a simple dust mask is useless. Mix a solution of 1 part household bleach to 10 parts water. Scrub the area gently with a stiff brush, ensuring you don't aerosolize the spores. Never use a vacuum cleaner, as it will blast spores throughout the house. After scrubbing, wipe the area with disposable cloths and place all cleaning materials in a sealed bag for disposal. However, I must stress: cleaning the surface is often just a temporary fix. The real concern is why it's growing on an interior wall. This strongly suggests a hidden moisture issue, possibly from a small plumbing leak within the wall or condensation. Without a professional inspection to identify and rectify the source, the mold will return, often worse than before. Given the health symptoms, a DIY approach is not the safest course. Professional assessment and remediation are strongly advised to protect your family's health. We can conduct a full inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to find the source.
