Safest way to clean damp, moldy bedroom wall myself?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has these black speckles that I just noticed when I was rearranging furniture last week. My husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches for the past month, and I'm really worried it's the mold causing it. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, even though it's an interior wall in our Jumeirah apartment. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without making our symptoms worse?

Based on your description of a damp interior wall, persistent health symptoms, and the location in Jumeirah, I strongly advise against a DIY approach in this case. The dampness you describe indicates a hidden moisture source, likely a small pipe leak or condensation issue, common in our humid coastal climate. Disturbing it yourself risks a massive, uncontrolled release of spores, significantly worsening your symptoms and contaminating your entire bedroom.

For a small, surface-level issue, the ONLY safe DIY step is to wipe the visible speckles with a cloth dampened with a diluted detergent solution (not bleach, which doesn't kill the roots) and then immediately discard the cloth. However, this is a temporary fix and will not address the dampness or hidden growth.

Given the symptoms and damp wall, this is a serious case. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, stipulate that any mold remediation involving potential building integrity issues or health hazards should be handled by licensed professionals to prevent cross-contamination and ensure proper disposal. The moisture needs to be professionally identified and resolved first.

You need a professional inspection to find the moisture source, assess the full extent of the mold behind the wardrobe and inside the wall, and execute a contained remediation.
