Safest way to clean mold in my kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this weird damp smell since the humid weather started a few weeks ago, and I just pulled a heavy dresser away from the wall to find a patch of black and green fuzzy mold behind it. I'm really worried about their health sleeping in there every night. What's the safest way for me to clean this myself without making the spores go everywhere and risk making them sick?

Okay, this is a serious situation, especially in a child's bedroom. The humid weather we've been having in Dubai is a major catalyst for this. First, safety is paramount. Do not attempt to clean this if the patch is larger than about one square meter, if the mold has penetrated the drywall/plaster, or if anyone in the household has asthma or respiratory issues. In those cases, you absolutely need a professional assessment.
For a smaller patch behind furniture, here's the safest DIY protocol. You MUST contain the spores. 1. Isolate the Area: Keep the kids and pets out. Seal the room by closing the door and placing a damp towel at the base. Close the AC vent in that room to prevent spores from entering the duct system, which is a huge concern in UAE villas. 2. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): This is non-negotiable. Wear an N95 respirator mask, safety goggles, and disposable gloves. 3. Containment: Lightly mist the mold patch with a spray bottle filled with water. This weighs down the spores and prevents them from becoming airborne during cleaning. 4. Cleaning: Do NOT use bleach. It's mostly water and can actually feed the mold root structure. For a non-porous surface like a painted wall, use a dedicated mold removal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar or a diluted detergent. Scrub gently with a disposable cloth. For porous surfaces like drywall, you often cannot clean it effectively; it may need cutting out and replacement. 5. Disposal: Place all used cloths, gloves, and any other materials into a sealed plastic bag before removing it from the room for disposal. The critical issue is that you've only found the visible colony. Mold is like an iceberg. The real concern is the hidden moisture source and potential colonization inside the wall cavity. The damp smell indicates this is likely. Given it's your children's room, the safest course is to get a professional inspection. We use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to find the exact moisture source and extent of the growth, which is almost always worse than it appears. This is the only way to guarantee it's truly resolved and safe for them to sleep there. Call us for a proper assessment. We can determine if it's a simple fix or requires remediation. 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com. |
