Should I address musty smell and damp walls?« Back to Previous Page

After the rain last month, I noticed a musty smell in my bedroom closet, which gets worse every time it rains. It’s especially noticeable when opening or closing the door. The walls seem damp too, but I’m not sure if that's normal since we live on the third floor and rarely get flooding issues here. Could this be mold, and who should address it—me as the tenant or the landlord?

Absolutely, the musty smell and damp walls you're experiencing could very well be indicative of mold growth. Mold thrives in moist environments and can produce a distinct odor that may worsen during periods of increased humidity, such as after rain.

In the UAE, particularly within Dubai's climate, it’s common to encounter moisture issues due to various factors including high humidity levels and occasional rainfall, especially during summer months or from seasonal weather patterns. Your third-floor location does not typically preclude you from mold growth; leaks, condensation, or even poorly ventilated areas can create the necessary conditions for mold to flourish.

Given that this is a residential area, it’s advisable to address the situation promptly and professionally. Mold remediation should be handled by certified professionals who understand local environmental regulations such as those outlined in the UAE’s Building Code (Annex 1 of Federal Decree-Law No. 6 of 2009) which mandates the use of specific materials and standards for moisture management.

You might consider initiating a conversation with your landlord to discuss the issue, especially if it's impacting your living conditions or health. However, as a tenant in Dubai (UAE), you also have certain rights under local consumer protection laws that may allow you to request remediation services from your landlord.

For practical steps:

1. Conduct a visual inspection of affected areas for visible mold growth.
2. Use a moisture meter to check the humidity levels and potential dampness in walls or floors.
3. Ensure proper ventilation, especially during humid periods.
4. Address any leaks promptly as they can be a major source of moisture.

Should you decide to proceed with remediation:
• Engage a professional company like Saniservice (contact 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com for assistance).
• Ensure the contractor adheres to local standards and uses appropriate methods such as containment, removal, and cleaning/disinfection of affected areas.

Remember, mold can pose health risks including respiratory issues, so it’s important to address this promptly. Regular maintenance and proactive measures against moisture can help prevent recurrence.
