Should I clean black mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the exterior wall and I think the recent humidity made it worse. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

This is a critical question we get often here in Dubai. That black, fuzzy patch behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of a persistent moisture issue, likely exacerbated by our high humidity and the fact it's on an exterior wall, which can be prone to condensation from the temperature differential with the powerful AC inside.
While small surface mold can sometimes be addressed with a DIY approach, I strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach is mostly water, and its ionic structure prevents it from properly penetrating porous materials like drywall or concrete. It may bleach the surface color away, giving a false sense of security, but the underlying mold roots (hyphae) remain and will regrow quickly. For a non-porous surface like tile, a solution of detergent, vinegar, or a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide is better. However, your situation—a recurring patch that's been growing unnoticed for a potential long period—warrants a professional inspection. The visible growth is often just the "tip of the iceberg." The moisture source needs to be identified; it could be a small leak in the building envelope, capillary rising damp from the ground (common here), or severe interstitial condensation. Disturbing it without proper containment can aerosolize harmful spores throughout your bedroom. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source and extent of the problem, which is almost always greater than what's visible. For a proper remediation that includes containment, air scrubbing, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence, calling a professional is not just recommended, it's essential for your property's integrity and your health.
