Should I DIY AC repair or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our master bedroom has been making a weird rattling noise and struggling to get the room below 25°C, even at night. Our DEWA bill in our Jumeirah villa shot up by almost 400 AED last month, which has to be connected. I’m handy, but I don’t want to mess with the refrigerant or electrical parts myself.
Is it worth just replacing the filters and cleaning the outside unit on my own, or should I immediately call a professional for a full service to avoid a bigger problem and higher bills?

Based on your description, this is absolutely a job for a professional, not a DIY fix. That 400 AED spike in your DEWA bill is a massive red flag indicating your AC system is working extremely hard due to a significant inefficiency.
The rattling noise you hear could be several serious issues: a failing compressor (the heart of the unit), a loose or broken fan blade, or debris in the blower assembly. These are not user-serviceable parts. Attempting to open the indoor or outdoor unit yourself can void the manufacturer's warranty and, more importantly, poses a serious electrical hazard. While replacing the air filter is always a good practice and something you can do, it's unlikely to resolve the core problem at this stage. Cleaning the external condenser unit can help with efficiency, but if done incorrectly with high water pressure, you can easily bend the delicate fins and cause even more damage, further reducing performance. In Dubai's climate, a struggling AC unit is more than an inconvenience; it leads to excessive humidity buildup, which can promote mold growth inside your ducts and on cool surfaces, creating a secondary indoor air quality issue. For a comprehensive diagnosis, you need a certified technician who can check refrigerant levels (handling refrigerant requires an EPA-certified license, which is a strict regulation here), measure electrical amp draw on the compressor, and perform a full system performance test. This will identify the root cause of the noise and the lack of cooling. Given the symptoms and the financial impact you're already seeing, I strongly recommend you call a pro immediately to prevent a complete system failure, especially heading into the hotter months.
