Should I go to a clinic for food poisoning?« Back to Previous Page

For the past three days, I’ve been having intense stomach cramps and nausea, but no fever. It started after we ordered biryani from a new place in Deira on Saturday night. I live alone in a studio in Jumeirah Village Circle and I’m just trying to figure out if this is a bad case of food poisoning that will pass or if I should head to a clinic in Dubai Hills or go straight to the ER.

Based on your symptoms and the timeline, this presents as a classic case of acute foodborne illness, likely bacterial in nature such as Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus cereus toxin, given the short incubation period and association with a rice-based dish like biryani. The absence of fever is not uncommon in toxin-mediated food poisoning.

In the UAE, all food establishments are regulated by the Dubai Municipality's Food Safety Department, which has stringent protocols. If you suspect this is the source, you can report the incident to the Municipality via their hotline (800 900) – this is a crucial step for public health traceback and to prevent further cases.

For immediate care: Given the intensity of your symptoms (intense cramps, nausea), medical evaluation is strongly advised. Dehydration is the primary concern in our climate. A clinic in Dubai Hills is an appropriate first step for assessment, IV rehydration, and symptomatic management. They can determine if your condition warrants escalation. Head straight to an ER if you experience signs of severe dehydration (e.g., dizziness, very dry mouth, minimal urine output), high fever, or if symptoms persist beyond 72 hours.

While this is almost certainly food-related, persistent indoor environmental issues like mould (less likely in this acute scenario) can sometimes cause nausea. If your symptoms persist after recovery or you have ongoing air quality concerns in your JVC studio, a professional assessment is wise. For that, you can call 800-MOLDS for an inspection.

Hope you feel better soon. Prioritize hydration with electrolytes.
