Should I hire a pro for black bathroom grout?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in Jumeirah Park doesn't have a window and the grout between the tiles has started turning black in the corners. We’ve been here for a year and only really noticed it getting worse over the last month since the weather got more humid. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I just clean it myself with bleach this weekend?

That black grout in your Jumeirah Park bathroom is a classic sign of mold growth, and you're spot on to link it to the recent spike in humidity. In a windowless bathroom, the lack of ventilation means steam from showers has nowhere to go, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold spores that are always present in the air.

While a quick scrub with bleach might remove the surface discoloration, it's a temporary fix at best. Bleach doesn't penetrate porous materials like grout to kill the root structure (hyphae) of the mold. This means it will almost certainly grow back, often worse than before. For a small, surface-level area, a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar might be more effective than bleach.

However, given the accelerated growth you've noticed and the fact it's been there for a while, I'd strongly recommend a professional assessment. The visible growth on the grout is often just the tip of the iceberg; there could be moisture and colonization behind the tiles or in the wall cavity that you can't see. We follow strict UAE municipality guidelines for assessment and remediation to ensure the problem is solved at its source, not just cosmetically covered up.

For peace of mind and to ensure your family's health isn't at risk from airborne spores, it's best to get it properly inspected. We can conduct moisture mapping and air quality tests to determine the full extent.
