Should I remove closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It must have been growing since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, but we only found it today while digging out a sweater. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional company right away?

Based on the specifics of your case, I would strongly advise against a DIY approach and recommend a professional inspection. The presence of black mold, especially in a closet storing textiles like winter clothes, is a significant concern. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, mold growth is rarely an isolated surface issue; it is a symptom of a persistent moisture problem, likely condensation from year-round AC operation or a hidden leak.

Attempting removal yourself with store-bought chemicals like bleach is ineffective and dangerous. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but does not kill the mold roots (hyphae) within porous materials like drywall or fabric. More critically, improper handling will aerosolize the mold spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, leading to a much larger and more expensive remediation problem. You also risk personal exposure to mycotoxins.

Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for environmental hygiene and remediation. A professional company like Saniservice follows these protocols precisely. Our process involves containment of the affected area with negative air pressure, use of HEPA filtration scrubbers to capture airborne spores, specialized antimicrobial treatments to eliminate the colony at its root, and, crucially, identifying and rectifying the source of moisture to prevent immediate recurrence. Your winter clothes will also require professional hygienization to salvage them.

Given that the mold has likely been growing for months, a professional assessment is essential. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and a safe, guaranteed resolution.
