Should I remove shower mold myself or hire a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling corner above my shower in our Jumeirah Village apartment has started turning black with mold, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. I’m pretty handy, but I’m worried it might be in the ceiling itself. Should I try tackling this myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

Good question, and a very common issue we see here in Dubai, especially in areas like Jumeirah Village. The intense humidity is a major catalyst for mold growth.

While a small patch on a non-porous surface like a tile grout line can sometimes be handled with a dedicated mold cleaner (never use bleach, it's mostly water and can actually feed the mold), your situation with the ceiling corner is a red flag. The black discoloration spreading from the ceiling corner above the shower strongly suggests moisture has penetrated the gypsum board or plaster. Scrubbing the surface will only remove the visible growth, not the root system inside the material. This means it will almost certainly return, often worse than before.

In the UAE, improper remediation can violate community regulations if spores spread to adjacent units. For a case like yours, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the damage behind the surface. If the ceiling is compromised, a full remediation protocol—containment, HEPA filtration, and safe removal of affected materials—is necessary to protect your health and your property's integrity.

For a proper assessment and to prevent it from coming back, it's best to get it looked at. You can call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
