Should I take my toddler to ER for fever and cough?« Back to Previous Page

My 3-year-old has had a high fever and a really bad cough for the past three days, and it seems worse at night when the AC is on full blast in our Jumeirah Park villa. I’ve been giving him Calpol but it only helps for a few hours. Should I take him to the emergency room at Al Jalila tonight or is it safe to wait for a morning appointment at our local clinic?

Based on the symptoms you've described, particularly the persistent high fever and the worsening of the cough at night with AC use, this warrants immediate medical attention. While I am an indoor environmental quality specialist and not a pediatrician, the pattern you've observed strongly suggests a potential environmental trigger exacerbating a respiratory infection. In Dubai's climate, a poorly maintained AC system can be a significant source of airborne irritants like mold spores, bacteria (e.g., Legionella), and excessive dust, which can severely aggravate a child's already compromised respiratory system.

For a child that young with a high fever that is not responding well to medication, the safest course of action is to have him evaluated by a doctor tonight at Al Jalila Children's Emergency. They can rule out serious conditions like pneumonia or bronchitis and provide appropriate treatment. Do not wait for a morning appointment.

Once your son is on the mend, I highly recommend a professional inspection of your villa's HVAC system. The fact that symptoms intensify with AC operation is a major red flag. We commonly find microbial contamination in ductwork and evaporator coils, especially in villas where systems may not be serviced frequently enough according to UAE standards. A certified hygienization service can test for contaminants and perform a thorough cleaning and disinfection, which is crucial for long-term health in our region.
