Should I test for mold urgently with kids coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot this past month and I just discovered a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Al Barsha and I'm really worried it's mold, especially with the humidity creeping up again. How quickly should I get a professional mold test done, like is this something I need to handle this week or can it wait?

Given the symptoms you've described – persistent coughing in children and visible black microbial growth behind the wardrobe – this constitutes a high-priority situation that warrants immediate professional attention. You should not wait.

The combination of a confirmed moisture source (the hidden space behind furniture is a classic spot for condensation buildup, exacerbated by our Dubai climate) and health symptoms, especially in vulnerable individuals like children, means you are likely dealing with an active mold colony. The spores from this colony are already airborne, which is what is causing the respiratory irritation. Delaying action allows the colony to mature and release more spores, potentially worsening the health impacts and increasing the scope and cost of remediation.

In the UAE, villa construction in areas like Al Barsha can be susceptible to hidden condensation issues, particularly with AC ductwork and on cold bridges in exterior walls. A professional inspection and test is critical for two reasons: first, to accurately identify the species of mold (some types are more hazardous than others), and second, and most importantly, to locate the primary moisture source that is feeding the growth. Simply cleaning the visible spots without addressing the underlying cause will result in a rapid recurrence.

I strongly recommend you schedule a certified mold inspection this week. Our teams use thermal imaging cameras and borescopes to non-invasively pinpoint moisture and hidden growth, followed by air and surface sampling to identify the contaminant levels. This provides a clear roadmap for effective remediation.
