Should I worry about mold in my AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making this damp, earthy smell for the last couple of months, and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. I finally pulled the filter out yesterday and the inside of the unit is covered in black and green fuzzy spots. What's the proper way to get this cleaned in Dubai to make sure it's safe, and should I be worried about these symptoms?

Based on your description, you should absolutely be concerned. The damp, earthy smell combined with visible black and green fuzzy growth inside the AC unit is a definitive sign of a significant mold infestation. Your symptoms—waking up with a stuffy nose and sore throat—are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores being circulated directly into your bedroom environment.

In Dubai's climate, this is an extremely common issue. The constant high humidity and the year-round reliance on air conditioning create the perfect conditions for mold growth. The cooling coils produce condensation, and if the unit is not meticulously maintained, this moisture, combined with dust and organic debris, becomes an ideal breeding ground for mold.

The proper cleaning protocol is not a simple DIY task. Wiping visible spots is insufficient and can aerosolize spores, worsening contamination. A professional remediation is required. This involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and applying specialized biocides and detergents approved for use in HVAC systems to not only remove the growth but also disinfect the surfaces. Crucially, the entire system, including the deep internal coils and drip pans, must be addressed.

For a situation this advanced, we strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. Our certified technicians at Saniservice are trained in UAE-specific standards and use EPA-approved protocols to safely and effectively resolve AC mold issues, ensuring your indoor air quality is restored and your health symptoms subside.
