Tackle closet mold myself or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started smelling really damp, and I’ve just found a small patch of black mold on a leather bag in the back. It’s been worse since last week’s humidity spike. Is this something I can tackle myself with a dehumidifier and vinegar, or do I need to call a professional cleaning service to make sure it doesn’t come back?

Based on the conditions you've described—specifically the location in Jumeirah, the recent humidity spike, and the presence of visible mold on porous materials like leather—I strongly recommend you call a professional service for a proper inspection and remediation.
While a dehumidifier is an excellent preventative tool for general humidity control in Dubai, it will not address the existing mold colony. The smell indicates active microbial growth, and the visible patch is likely just the fruiting body; the actual hyphae (root structure) can penetrate deeper into materials and the surrounding building fabric. Using vinegar or other DIY solutions often only bleaches the surface appearance without killing the organism at its root, leading to rapid and recurring growth. In the UAE's climate, this is a persistent issue. Our buildings are tightly sealed for AC efficiency, but this can trap moisture if not properly managed. A professional assessment will identify the precise source of the moisture, which could be anything from a minor condensation issue due to temperature differentials to a more serious hidden leak. They will then execute a protocol that includes containment to prevent spore dispersal, HEPA vacuuming, and application of UAE-approved antimicrobial agents to properly eradicate the growth. For valuable items like leather goods, specific cleaning techniques are required. Given the health risks associated with mold exposure and the high probability of recurrence with an incomplete treatment, a pro is the way to go. We can assess it properly.
