Termite Frass vs. Sand: How to Tell the Difference?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and I just noticed some small, gritty piles on the floor near the patio door. My husband thinks it's just sand from outside, but it keeps showing up every morning and feels different. What’s the difference between termite frass and regular sand or dust?

Excellent question. This is a very common concern here in the UAE, especially in villas with direct ground contact like those in Jumeirah. As an IEQ specialist, distinguishing between environmental dust and biological waste is a fundamental part of our inspections. Here's how to tell the difference between termite frass and regular sand.
The primary distinction is in the material's composition and uniformity. Dubai's ubiquitous sand is just that—sand. It's composed of tiny, irregularly shaped grains of silica and other minerals. It feels gritty and will vary in color and grain size. Termite frass, however, is not sand; it's fecal matter. For drywood termites—the most common type we find infesting structural wood here—the frass is six-sided, granular pellets. They are almost perfectly uniform in size and shape, resembling coarse coffee grounds or sawdust but with defined edges. If you crush sand, it turns to finer dust. If you crush termite frass, it may powder slightly but you'll still see the pellet structure. The pattern is also a major clue. Sand is tracked in randomly. Frass is a sign of an active infestation. Termites push these pellets out of "kick-out holes" in the wood they are consuming to keep their galleries clean. You'll find these small piles reappearing consistently in the same spot, often near doors, window sills, or skirting boards, exactly as you described. Given your villa's location and the recurring nature of the piles, I would strongly recommend a professional inspection. UAE regulations, particularly the Dubai Municipality's public health guidelines, take pest infestations very seriously due to their potential for significant structural damage. A certified inspector can confirm the presence of termites, identify the species, and assess the extent of the infestation, which is often hidden within walls or wooden structures.
