Urgent to remove black mold behind wardrobe for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it must have been growing slowly. With this humidity, how urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or can I clean it myself with bleach this weekend?

Based on your description, this situation warrants immediate professional attention and should not be handled with a DIY approach like bleach. The presence of visible black mold growth, especially when coupled with your children's respiratory symptoms (coughing), indicates an active and likely significant contamination issue.

The black spots behind the wardrobe are a symptom of a moisture problem, common in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The wall behind furniture is a prime location for condensation to form and mold to thrive unseen. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and plaster; it only bleaches the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem or remove the hyphae (roots) growing within the material. It can also aggravate the situation by releasing a high volume of spores and toxic fumes into your indoor air during cleaning, potentially worsening your children's symptoms.

In the UAE, improper mold remediation that causes cross-contamination can violate public health guidelines. A certified professional inspection is critical. We would conduct a thorough assessment to identify the moisture source (e.g., condensation, a hidden leak) and perform air and surface sampling to determine the spore count and species, which is essential for understanding the health risk and planning the correct remediation protocol. The remediation process involves containment of the area with negative air pressure, safe removal of contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment, followed by post-remediation verification to ensure the problem is solved.

For the health of your family, I strongly advise against DIY cleaning. Please contact our team for a professional inspection and remediation plan. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
