What are common health signs of mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I just pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a bunch of black and greenish spots behind it. I'm really worried this is making them sick. What are the most common health signs that you've actually experienced from mold exposure in your home?

Based on my daily inspections in Dubai and Sharjah apartments, the health signs you're describing are unfortunately very common with mold exposure. The constant coughing in children is a primary indicator, often accompanied by wheezing, nasal congestion, and sore throats. We frequently see residents, especially kids, experiencing persistent allergy-like symptoms: itchy eyes, skin rashes (like eczema flare-ups), and general fatigue that doesn't improve. In more sensitive individuals, it can trigger asthma attacks or lead to frequent headaches.

What you found behind the toy chest is a major red flag. That black and greenish spotting is almost certainly microbial growth, exacerbated by our high UAE humidity and lack of ventilation, especially when furniture is placed against exterior walls which can develop condensation. The porous nature of wood in that toy chest means the spores have likely penetrated deep into the material.

For your children's health, this requires immediate action. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize the spores and make the air quality worse. The first step is to isolate the area and get a professional indoor air quality (IAQ) test. We use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find the exact source of the moisture—often a small AC leak or rising damp—and take air and surface samples to identify the spore types and concentration levels. This is crucial for proper remediation, which is mandated by Dubai Municipality guidelines (like Dubai Municipality Circular 196) to be done by certified companies.

Given the symptoms, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can determine the extent of the problem and create a safe, effective remediation plan to protect your family's health.
