What are common signs of mold in my apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and my bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has a weird damp smell, even though we haven’t used it much since winter. I just pulled out some shoes from the back and found a few of them covered in fuzzy white and black spots. What are the most common signs of mold I should be looking for in other hidden spots?

Based on your description, you are already observing several classic signs of a mold issue common here in Dubai. The fuzzy white and black spots on the shoes are a definitive visual confirmation. The persistent damp, musty odor from your closet is a huge red flag; that's the microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released by actively growing colonies.

Beyond what you've found, be extremely vigilant for other signs. Look for any visible discoloration on walls, ceilings, or baseboards – it can appear as black speckling, greenish streaks, or white cottony patches. Check behind furniture placed against exterior walls, as these are common cold spots where condensation forms. Peeling wallpaper or bubbling paint can indicate moisture trapped beneath, providing a perfect habitat for mold. Since you mentioned health concerns, persistent allergic reactions like coughing, sneezing, or itchy eyes, especially when at home, are a major indicator of spore concentration in the air.

Given the high humidity in Jumeirah, especially with AC units creating condensation, hidden growth inside wall cavities, under sinks, or within the AC ductwork itself is a serious risk. DIY inspections can disturb colonies, causing a massive release of spores.

For a definitive assessment, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras is crucial to identify the full extent of the problem, including hidden sources.
