What are signs of hidden mold after flooding?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha was flooded during the storms a couple of months back, and even though we had it cleaned, I'm worried the moisture got into the walls. Lately, my youngest has been having a really bad cough that gets worse at night, especially in her room, and I noticed a few black speckles behind her wardrobe where I moved it to vacuum. What are the most common signs of hidden mold we should look for in this situation?

Based on the details you've provided about the flooding in Al Barsha, what you're describing are classic red flags for hidden mold growth. The combination of residual moisture in building materials and the health symptoms is very concerning.

The most common signs of hidden mold post-flooding include:

1. A persistent, musty odor. This is often the first and most reliable indicator, even if you can't see anything.
2. Unexplained health issues, exactly like your daughter's worsening nocturnal cough. Other symptoms can include itchy eyes, sinus congestion, and skin irritation.
3. Visual clues like the black speckles you found. Look for warping of wooden skirting boards, discoloration or bubbling of paint/wallpaper, and a salt-like efflorescence on walls, which indicates persistent dampness.
4. Worsening allergy or asthma symptoms when in a specific room.

In the UAE's climate, with its high humidity, enclosed spaces like behind wardrobes and inside AC ducts are prime locations for mold to thrive after a water event. The initial cleaning likely addressed surface water but not the moisture absorbed into the plaster, concrete, and insulation.

Given the confirmed water damage and the health impact on a child, I strongly recommend you stop DIY investigation and get a professional indoor environmental inspection. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air/surface sampling to pinpoint the exact extent and type of mold contamination, which is crucial for planning an effective remediation strategy that complies with Dubai Municipality guidelines.
