What are the less obvious signs of mold in a villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I just found a bunch of black spots growing on the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is against the outside wall. We keep the AC running constantly but it feels damp in that corner. What are the less obvious signs of mold I should be looking for in other parts of the villa?

Based on your description, those black spots and the persistent cough are highly concerning and strongly indicative of a mold issue, especially given the damp corner by the outside wall—a classic problem here due to thermal bridging and condensation from our intense AC use.

Beyond visible growth, here are the less obvious signs to investigate throughout your villa:

1. A Persistent Musty Odor: This is often the first and most telling sign. If a room or closet has a damp, earthy smell that doesn't go away with cleaning, it's likely hidden mold. Your sense of smell is a powerful detection tool.

2. Unexplained Health Symptoms: As you're seeing with the coughing, mold exposure can cause chronic respiratory issues, itchy eyes, skin rashes, headaches, and sinus congestion. If symptoms improve when you leave the villa, it's a major red flag.

3. Water Stains or Discoloration: Look for yellowish, brownish, or greyish stains on walls, ceilings, skirting boards, or inside cabinets. These are often signs of past or ongoing moisture intrusion where mold can thrive unseen.

4. Warping or Peeling: Materials like wood, laminate, or even wallpaper that are bubbling, warping, or peeling are suffering from excess moisture, creating the perfect environment for mold behind the surface.

5. Condensation: Constant condensation on windows or cold water pipes is a sign of high humidity levels inside, which encourages mold growth everywhere.

Given the health symptoms and visible growth, a DIY approach is not advised. Proper inspection requires moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality tests to identify the full extent of the problem, including inside walls and AC ducts, which is critical under Dubai's humid conditions.
