What's best product to clean and prevent shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black, and I only really noticed it this week. It’s in the corner that never gets any sun and always feels a bit damp, even though we use the exhaust fan. What’s the most effective product I can find locally to safely clean this off and stop it from coming back?

Based on the description of your shower, the black discoloration in the grout is almost certainly mold growth, a very common issue here in Dubai due to our high humidity levels. That perpetually damp, shaded corner is the perfect breeding ground for it.
For a localized, surface-level issue, the most effective and readily available product in the UAE is a dedicated grout cleaner with anti-fungal properties. Look for brands like HG or Cif that offer mold-removing formulas. For a more heavy-duty option, a diluted chlorine bleach solution (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) applied carefully with a small brush can be effective, but ensure the bathroom is extremely well-ventilated during use – that exhaust fan is critical. NEVER mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. However, proper technique is just as important as the product. Scrub the affected grout lines thoroughly and let the product sit for the recommended time to penetrate. After cleaning, it is absolutely vital to seal the grout with a high-quality, penetrating grout sealer. This creates a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from soaking in, which is the primary way to stop it from coming back. You can find good sealers at most major hardware stores like ACE Hardware or Home Centre. Important note: If the discoloration persists after a thorough cleaning, or if you notice a musty odor, the mold may have penetrated deep into the grout or behind the tiles. Surface cleaning won't fix a deeper infestation. In such cases, professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the full extent and prevent potential health issues or structural damage. If you're unsure or the problem seems extensive, it's best to get a professional opinion. You can call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection. |
