What's the best dehumidifier for a damp closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa feels damp to the touch, especially our leather jackets. It's been like this ever since the weather started getting warmer and more humid last month. Even with the AC on constantly, the clothes in the back never feel completely dry. What's the most effective type of dehumidifier for a large walk-in closet, and should I get a big standalone unit or are those mini silica gel packs enough?

Based on the conditions you’re describing in your Mirdif villa, this is a classic case of localized high humidity that a central AC system often can't address, especially in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like a walk-in closet.

For a large closet, mini silica gel packs are completely insufficient; they are designed for tiny, sealed spaces like a camera case. You need active, powered dehumidification. The most effective type for this application is a compact, refrigerant (compressor-based) dehumidifier with a built-in humidistat. Look for a unit with a capacity of at least 10-12 liters per day. This will actively pull moisture from the air and collect it in a tank, allowing your leather goods and other clothing to finally dry out properly.

However, a crucial first step is to identify the source of the moisture. In UAE villas, this dampness can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious issue, like a small plumbing leak in the slab or walls, or insufficient insulation leading to condensation on cold surfaces. The constant AC use can actually exacerbate this by creating cold spots where moisture condenses.

Given that your children's health is involved, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified technicians use thermal imaging cameras and precise moisture meters to pinpoint the exact cause—whether it's just ambient humidity or a hidden defect. This ensures you're treating the problem, not just the symptom.
