What's the best way to retrofit west-facing windows for heat?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our villa in Mirdif has these huge west-facing windows, and this summer's electricity bill from DEWA was absolutely shocking. I’ve noticed the AC is running non-stop just to keep the main living area cool, especially in the afternoons when the sun is directly on the glass. I’m worried this is such a huge waste of energy, but I also can’t live in a sauna. What’s the most effective and eco-friendly way to retrofit these windows to block the heat without making the room too dark?

As a specialist in building performance here in Dubai, your issue with the west-facing windows is a classic and major contributor to high cooling loads. The most effective and eco-friendly retrofit is a multi-faceted approach.
First, the primary defense is applying a high-performance solar control window film. Look for films with a low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and a high Infrared Rejection (IRR) rate, ideally above 80%. This technology rejects radiant heat while still allowing visible light to pass through, preventing that "cave effect." Ensure the film is ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology) approved for quality and safety. Second, complement the film with exterior shading. Retractable awnings or louvres are excellent. They block the direct sun before it hits the glass, which is far more efficient than dealing with the heat after it penetrates. For a more permanent solution, consider installing shade sails. Third, address the air leakage. Over time, window seals degrade. A professional can perform a blower door test to identify leaks. Re-sealing the windows with appropriate weatherstripping is a low-cost, high-impact upgrade that prevents cool, expensive air from escaping. Given the severity of the afternoon sun in Mirdif, a professional energy audit is highly recommended. We can use thermal imaging to pinpoint exactly where the heat gain is worst and tailor a solution.
