What's the fastest way to dehumidify a moldy closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started smelling really damp and musty, especially over the last few weeks of intense humidity. I opened it this morning to get a shirt and found a few of my leather handbags have what looks like white mold spots on them. I’m so worried about my clothes and shoes in there now. What’s the fastest and most effective way to dehumidify a walk-in closet here in Dubai to stop this from getting worse?

That's a classic and very concerning issue we see daily in Dubai, especially during these peak humidity months. That damp, musty smell is a clear indicator of active microbial growth, and those white spots on your leather are almost certainly mold. The fastest way to address this is a two-pronged attack: immediate containment and systemic correction.
First, remove all affected items like the handbags immediately. Isolate them in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent cross-contamination. For the closet itself, the fastest temporary solution is to use a high-capacity desiccant dehumidifier, not a refrigerant-based one. Refrigerant models struggle immensely with Dubai's high ambient temps and the small, cool closet space. A desiccant unit will pull moisture from the air much more aggressively. Pair this with a continuous fan to circulate air and prevent stagnant, humid pockets. However, this is just a band-aid. The root cause is likely insufficient air exchange and possibly a temperature differential on that interior wall causing condensation. Permanently, you need to ensure the AC is correctly sized and that the closet door is left ajar to allow conditioned, dehumidified air from the room to circulate inside. For a walk-in closet, installing a small transfer grille on the door can be a game-changer. Given the visible mold growth, this has moved beyond a simple humidity issue. The spores are already present and can affect your health and belongings. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. We can use thermal imaging to identify any hidden condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the problem, all in line with Dubai Municipality's indoor environmental standards.
