Why does my AC make noise only at night?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom has started making a gurgling and dripping sound inside the wall, but only at night around 2 AM. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah Park and it’s driving us crazy trying to sleep. I checked the indoor unit and the drain pan doesn't seem to be overflowing. What could be causing this noise specifically at night and how can I stop it?

Good evening from Dubai. That's a classic and incredibly frustrating issue we encounter frequently in villas across Jumeirah Park, Meadows, and similar communities. The fact that it's happening specifically at night is the critical clue here.
The most likely culprit is a partially restricted condensate drain line. During the day, the AC runs frequently in our harsh climate, and the constant flow of water can keep the pipe clear enough. However, at night, around 2-3 AM, two things happen: the outdoor ambient temperature drops significantly, and your AC unit likely enters a longer, slower cooling cycle. This allows a small amount of condensate to pool and stagnate inside the drain line or the trap. The gurgling sound is air bubbles struggling to pass through this blockage, and the dripping is the water finally overcoming the obstruction and falling down the pipe inside the wall cavity. It's also possible the drain pipe's slope is insufficient or has a sag, creating a natural pocket for water to collect until a certain volume is reached. The drop in temperature at night causes the PVC pipe to very slightly contract, which can also alter how water flows through it. Firstly, do not attempt to clear the line with chemicals yourself, as improper use can damage the pipe and void HVAC warranties, which is a big concern under Dubai Municipality regulations. You can check if the primary drain outlet (usually a white PVC pipe near your outdoor unit) is dripping water when the AC is on. If it's dry or has a very weak flow, that confirms a blockage. This is not just a noise nuisance; a blocked drain can eventually lead to water damage and mold growth inside your wall, which is a serious indoor air quality hazard. I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our technicians use specialized air-pressure jets and CCTV cameras to diagnose and clear blockages without damaging the property.
