How to treat closet mold and prevent moisture?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has had a persistent damp smell since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a patch of black mold in the back corner, behind some shoes. We run the AC constantly but it's clearly not enough. What's the best way to treat this safely and what can I do to stop the moisture from building up in there again?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of localized mold growth due to elevated humidity and poor air circulation, a common issue here in Dubai, especially during the more humid months. Here's how to approach it.

First, safety is paramount. For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can handle it yourself with caution. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the bottom with tape. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water—avoid bleach as it doesn't kill the roots and can release harmful fumes, especially in a confined space. Scrub the affected area thoroughly. Allow it to dry completely using a fan directed into the closet.

The core issue is the moisture. Running the AC lowers temperature but doesn't always adequately manage humidity in enclosed, stagnant spaces like closets. For prevention, you MUST improve air flow. Leave the closet doors ajar periodically. Consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a moisture absorber like DampRid inside the closet. Ensure there's a gap between the wall and your stored items; never push boxes or shoes directly against the wall. If the damp smell persists after cleaning, the mold may have penetrated the drywall or there could be a hidden condensation issue from the AC ductwork.

For a persistent problem or if the area is larger than 1m², UAE civil defense regulations often recommend professional assessment and remediation to ensure it's done safely and effectively. We can perform a detailed moisture survey to identify the exact source. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection.
